Discourse Analysis of Eriyanto

Dr. Eriyanto is one of an active writer and researcher in Indonesia. He has written some text books for media studies. I was lucky to know him in person when he was at Post-graduate Program of Communication Science, University of Indonesia in 2008. At Friday April 4th 2012, I had a chance to attend his training about text analysis methodology at communication program of Al Azhar University of Indonesia to learn more about his expertise in media analysis. Yes, Dr. Eriyanto shared his knowledge and experience on analyzing media text using content analysis, hermeneutics, semiotics, and discourse analysis. Discourse analysis, as one of his material brought to the class, was derived from one of his famous text book “Analisis Wacana : Pengantar Analisis Teks Media” (Discourse Analysis : An Introduction to Media Text Analysis).

“Discourse Analysis/Analisis Wacana” contains of Dr. Eriyanto’s explaination about discourse as theory and research methods types based on its founders or developers. Discourse is any messages in a structural language that have interconnected properties of signs, symbols, or codes (Littlejohn, 2002: 76); or, a systematically organized set of statements that gives expression to the meanings and values of an institution (Williams, 2003 : 160). Thus discourse analysis is a tool that enables researchers to elaborate how messages are organized, used, and understood (Littlejohn, 2002: 76). His book would train us about how and why the text published or broadcasted in the media is produced and what could be comprehended between the text and the media.

Then I had a kind of honourable challenge to make a design photograph of Dr. Eriyanto’s “Discourse Analysis” book. I set to photograph that book on a still-life/multi table with 2 continuous lamps. My intention was to present this book in a still-life photography style. The challenge was how I could reveal this book in an artistic way. How does it look? You ‘discourse’ it.
